Kevin Boyle * Social Justice Power Hour

Years ago Kevin Boyle stumbled across an obscure photo of a Chicago neighborhood celebrating the Fourth of July 1961. From that image ~ & the story it tells ~ he’s built "The Shattering" W. W. Norton & Company, a masterful new history of the 1960's, a decade whose conflicts shattered America’s postwar order & divide us still.
Kevin captures the inspiring & brutal events of this passionate time with a remarkable empathy that restores the humanity of those making this history which illuminates currents that still run through our politics. It is nothing short of a history for our times.
Dr. Peniel Joseph, Black power scholar & author (& our very own BRCSJ Board Vice Prez natch!) espouses that "The Shattering" “is an epic history of the 1960s for a new generation. This passionately narrated, luminously written account of the decade that forever transformed America brilliantly recounts how that era’s struggle for social justice & radical democracy continues to shape our own.”
Kevin is the William Smith Mason Professor of American History at Northwestern University. His previous book, "Arc of Justice", won the National Book Award for non-fiction & was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He’s also the author of "The UAW & the Heyday of American Liberalism, 1948-1968" & co-author of "Muddy Boots & Ragged Aprons". His essays & reviews have appeared in The Washington Post, the New York Times, the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, & other newspapers & magazines too numerous to mention.
