Jeff has written extensively on culture, politics, the arts, & music.
His first book, "Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation", garnered many honors, including the American Book Award & the Asian American Literary Award. It was just updated with co-author Dave "Davey D" Cook in a new edition for young adults, along with a new audiobook.
Jeff has been a USA Ford Fellow in Literature, a winner of the North Star News Prize, one of The Utne Reader's "50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World,” & he was recently named to the Frederick Douglass 200 as one of “200 living individuals who best embody the work & spirit of Douglass.”
Jeff co-founded CultureStr/ke, now known as the Center for Cultural Power, & ColorLines. He has written for a number of publications, including The Guardian, Slate, The Nation, the New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The Believer, Mother Jones, Salon, & Buzzfeed as well as numerous books, includin' "Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post-Civil Rights America" & "We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race & Resegregation".
