David F. Walker
Social Justice Power Hour #ThrowbackThursday
In celebration of Naomi debutin' on The CW, bringin' back our good friend David, award-winning comic book writer, author, filmmaker, journalist, & educator whose work in comix includes Bitter Root (Image Comics), Shaft, Power Man & Iron Fist, Nighthawk, Fury (Marvel), Cyborg (DC Comics), & too many other fantastic projects to list herein. He wrote the novel “Shaft’s Revenge”, the first new novel starring the titular private detective in nearly 40 years & produced one of the definitive documentaries on the topic of Blaxploitation films, "Macked, Hammered, Slaughtered, & Shafted". His publication “BadAzz MoFo” became internationally known as the indispensable resource guide to black films of the 70s & his most recent book was the more reflective, “Becoming Black: Personal Ramblings on Racial Identification, Racism & Popular Culture”.
As David his own self sez~
“It all comes back to representation and feeling a sense of belonging. Growing up as a kid, all my favorite superheroes, all my favorite comic books, the vast majority of them were white guys. And it’s not to say there’s anything wrong with that, but, then you have to look at what the other side of the equation is. What it is that you’re getting? And if you’re a black person, or a person of color, or a woman, what are the representations that you’re seeing? And are they all problematic if they exist at all? And I just feel like, I don’t want other young people to go through what I went through when I was young. Now I’m an old man, and I’d just like to see things change, a little bit.”
& David indeed is that changemaker we all need & that possiblity model of oh-so-many kids (& adults!) readin’ comix today so please join him & our own Chief Activist Robt Seda-Schreiber in virtual community-buildin' conversation equally empowerin' & entertainin'
